Visible from afar, the fortified defences of a medieval town - the earth dams and moats, the walls, towers and wards - were proof of the town’s ability to defend itself. The gates in the walls were weak points requiring special protection. In the 16th century Goslar’s defences were reinforced one last time, the gates themselves becoming veritable fortresses in themselves. Today the Broad Gate with the large fortified towers (“Brieger” and “Rißling”) and connecting walls with the “Werder Court” watchmen’s barracks document Goslar’s strength at that time. A large part of the town defences were demolished in the 18th and 19th centuries - they were redundant and interfered with the enlargement and modernisation of the town.
