In the 16th century the town wall consisted of the high inner stone town wall with defence towers, followed by a moat, a high steep earth dam, the outer moat which could be flooded, and finally the outer field wall. In the 18th century, when it was all too apparent that the defences could not withstand a modern ambush, large portions of the town wall were sold to the citizens for building sites or gardens. One large segment between the Wallstraße and St. Annenhöhe remained in public domain and is now a much-loved green belt skirting the Old Town: the old defences have become a peacefully idyllic public park.
